Looking
for the ultimate New Year’s Kiss? You needn’t
go any farther than downtown
Hershey. Here, Derry Township is offering revelers
the chance to have their New Year’s Kiss and
eat it, too. “We invite everyone to come out
and get kissed in Hershey on New Year’s Eve,”
said Mike Pries, event chairperson.
According
to the planning committee, several Hershey restaurants,
community members and church groups will provide
treats, and the evening will culminate in the HERSHEY®’S
Kiss raise at the new Press Building at the corner
of East Chocolate and Park avenues.
Along
with the terrific food, partygoers of all ages will
enjoy music by a variety of musical entertainment.
Beginning at 9 p.m. Not Quite Einstein will perform.
At 10:30, the headliner band—Big Tubba Mista—will
take the stage. Also during the evening, the Pink
Yard Flamingos will also perform, and the folks
from the Hershey Area Playhouse will sing. At press
time, some of the details of the evening were not
yet finalized.
In
addition, the kids will enjoy games and special
entertainment, including children’s performer
Jim Rule. During the celebration, Chocolate Avenue
will be closed between University Drive and Homestead
Road. “Our community has wanted to stage a
New Year’s Eve event for some time,”
Pries said, “and after two successful anniversary
picnics, we knew we had the volunteer power in place
to make it happen.”
The
Hershey Company, along with Hershey Entertainment
& Resorts Company, Penn State Milton S. Hershey
Medical Center, Buchart-Horn/Basco Associates and
Pepsi Bottling Group are sponsoring the evening’s
festivities. Media sponsors include WHP-TV, WINK
104 and The Hershey Chronicle. In addition to the
corporate and media sponsors, some 150 volunteers—including
a core group of Community Celebration Committee
members—have organized the activities and
events for the party. “We are confident,”
said Pries, “[that] New Year’s Eve in
Hershey will become our community’s newest
family tradition.’’

What
is a New Year's kiss without a Hershey's Kiss? Many
have wondered, but this year they will wonder no
more.
The
best of both kinds of kisses will be combined for
an inaugural New Year's Eve bash that will start
the year off right in Hershey, and hopefully start
a family-friendly tradition for years to come. click
